There is only an hour left until the Taking, where life as we know it will end for Marshini and Marshinini. They will be taken to Mars to meet their master, Marsha. As David Bowie says, “Is there Life on Mars?” They say “yes, yes there is”.

A satirical comedy about an extra-terrestrial cult.

Audience Responses

This was brilliant. It was super funny. Really clever writing. I was in tears laughing. "You bought it at Pick n' Pay." hahaha I laugh just thinking about it.

"Marsha: The Beginning of the End", starring Jazzara Jaslyn (Fatal Attraction) as Marshini and Kiroshan Naidoo (The Eulogists) as Marshinini is a whimsical, captivating little story about an extra-terrestrial cult of two who are eagerly awaiting The Taking, which we as the audience hear is due to happen just before the end of the play. On the surface "Marsha: The Beginning of the End" will probably appear to be a bit of fluff - fun and funny fluff, but fluff nevertheless. That is only until you start looking under the surface at what drives these two characters - besides David Bowie’s “Life on Mars”, of course. I have seen both Jazzara and Kiro perform since their ‘varsity days and I can tell you that this quirky production, directed by another UCT alumni Kathleen Stephens, is lucky to have them. The integrity, depth and earnestness that they bring to the story is what makes it so charming, witty and slightly otherworldly. Be prepared for fruit loops - yes, the cereal - to have a major part and masses of shiny tin foil. If you still have memories of the late 70s and early 80s, "Marsha: The Beginning of the End" is just the play for you. It will remind you of being a little lost, then getting slightly stoned and suddently absolutely everything seems hilariously possible while you have the munchies for fruit loops. Vintage 70s by today’s millennials. I loved it. (First reviewed on Weekend with Africa Melane on 567 Cape Talk, 15 September 2018)

I did enjoy the premise of a cult/religion being shown up for it's ridiculousness and commend the writers for this. it was also well acted. However I didn't find it as hilariously funny as some other theatre goer had posted online. But overall a fun production if only for it's three fingered zaniness.

It’s a hilarious romp through the ups and downs of the cult experience, a literal laugh a minute, and a dark yet slightly swollen tongue-in-cheek performance by two exceptional actors! Loved the chemistry between these two youthful, talented friends, and you will too!

Very entertaining. Thought this witty look at cults and the interpersonal dynamic was spot on. Jazzara and Kiro played these off-beat characters very convincingly.
