Joburg's BoyLesque company returns to Alexander Bar with their signature tongue in cheek style, remixing the classic  American style of burlesque comedy and striptease performances with a twist. This revue has a distinct South African irreverence - a fun journey through a variety of genres and styles of performance from comedy, cabaret, ballet and drag, voguing and of course, the art of strip tease.

This Christmas watch the BoyLesque dancers unwrap their presents...
Audience responses:
"Dynamic, entertaining, often deliciously risque and rich with performance variety throughout. Loved it!"

"The show was smart, stylish, witty, sexy ... The versatile and energetic cast gave their all."

"My expectations were blown clean out of the water! The director and performers were utterly masterful in the execution of their roles and the level of talent demonstrated is simply astounding."

The show was conceived by cult film - maker Stanimir Stoykov ( "Doobee Boobies"). “Boylesque” began its first run at the Foxwood Theatre in February 2013 and has been running in several venues like the Sandton Theatre on the Square, POPart Theatre in the Maboneng Precinct, Cantare at Monte Casino, Casta Diva in Pretoria and the Alexander Bar Upstairs Theatre in Cape Town.

Sorry to say this, but altogether it was pretty pathetic! Just to mention a few points: Technical problems, a girl in a "boylesque" show (as far as I remember, there was no woman announced). If nevertheless she wants to act in such a show, she should limit herself to singing, as her voice is not bad. But doing a striptease with the body she has, is not erotic at all, not even funny. To say it nicely, it was embarrassing. On the positive side the smaller white boy who is a good dancer and also cute. And the black guy who did a good performance as well. Better forget about the rest.

The only good thing about this show was the woman vocalist and true burlesque performer. Everything else was simply bad.

Although showing lots of flesh and a talented female singer, this completely vacuous show suffers from being far too derivative in an over traded drag artist market. It lacks any originality whatsoever. The final insult (among many) was the butchering of a shirley bassey song. I pray next summer the artists enjoy a staycation in joburg.

3/5 Certainly entertaining and there is definitely an audience for this kind of show in Cape Town! However, my sincere advice for this jolly ensemble would be to stick to the 'boy' side of their act if they want to be billed as BOYlesque Show. It could also do with some tightening and, indeed, a proper script for the MC/maid. The female participation seemed unnecessary and might fit more appropriately into a different genre. The one, very attractive young dancer was most talented and indeed demonstrated a solid dance background. Personally I would advise the MC/maid to take on , the part currently done by the female: he has a good voice and I am sure that he could perform an adapted version of her strip act most successfully, using songs of his own choice. All in all an evening of fun was had by everyone and we trust that they would be back - with a 'tighter' show next time. Cape Town is hungry for such entertainment ...

Of course, all artistry is very personalized in reviews. However, I really felt that this show lacked the true spirit and creativity that the Alexander Bar is trying to achieve upstairs. There were a couple of okay performers in the show (funny enough, the actress was one of the strongest) but the show really wasn't enjoyable. The main performer seemed high on something, and was not really into his craft at all (or so it seemed). Overall, we weren't too pleased with this show. We have seen some AMAZING plays at Alexander Bar, and really want the theatre area to grow and expand-. I hope the shows coming up will be better than this one.

More jokes about Madonna being dead, please. The show was wonderful. I saw it twice. It was a great way to kick off my first night in Cape Town and a highlight of our trip.
