"The result (Bal-Oog en Brommel as Theatre show) is incredible and the fact that it is in Afrikaans isn't at all a barrier for non-first-language speakers." - Mandy Watson, Brainwavez.

Theatre Review: Die Avonture Van Bal-Oog En Brommel: Moord In Ixiastraat

Bal-oog (De Klerk Oelofse) and Brommel (Richard September) are two teenage boys from Milnerton who have wild imaginations and too much free time on their hands. These two amateur sleuths traverse Ixia Street on their skateboards and introduce us to various characters who live in their neighbourhood. These include the girl next door, Anja, on whom Bal-oog has a serious crush, a learned professor with some unusual part-time activities of a sexual nature, a security guard called Indiana January, the policeman Constable Vermeulen, and many more. The most important role-player other than the boys is Bal-oog’s dog Boltjie, convincingly portrayed by September. The boys couldn’t do their detective work without him. Anja’s boyfriend, Kobus the rugby player, has disappeared and the local drug dealers Luke and Jason were seen carrying something in a black bag into a building on the street. It is up to Bal-oog and Brommel to solve the mystery. The play is performed in comic-book style, which means that the two actors perform all the roles and with physical theatre mechanisms portray everything, including sounds, creating the setting and miming the props. In the sound department they are assisted by Gertjie Besselen of Cat and Mr Jackal fame. He even jumps in where additional dialogue is required. All this at a lightning pace. The script has been astutely adapted from the graphic novel of the same name by Sjaka Septembir and scene upon scene unfolds before your very eyes, even if there are only two actors on an empty stage. Both De Klerk Oelofse and Richard September are multiple award-winning actors, mostly for portraying serious roles. In Afrikaans theatre they rank among the most talented and versatile and this play utilises all their skills. Bal-oog en Brommel is a total romp and it has even started developing a slight cult following. If you enjoy comics, graphic novels and superheroes, you’re going to love this piece. It is aimed at teenagers, but I did not see a single adult in the audience not enjoying the play every bit as much. The humour could belie the amount of work that has gone into it, but director Gideon Lombard and his team deserve to be supported for the frivolity they create and feromones they stimulate. I think I could become a groupie too, as it is a marvellous piece of work. Bal-oog en Brommel: Moord in Ixiastraat wil also be performed at the Woordfees in Stellenbosch in March 2019.
Fantastic, surprising and thoroughly delightful show!
Top class high energy physical theatre.
Really enjoyed BAL-OOG EN BROMMEL! Even when I lost the plot! A brilliant production. Lots of laughs. DeKlerk Oelofse and Richard September are a beautiful team and Gertie Besselson's contribution (both musical and insane) is great. Gideon Lombard's direction is inspired. If I had any criticism, I'd say it was a little long. Difficult to sustain such high energy throughout. But maybe just me....
What a comedy, absolutely awesome and enjoyable, great job actors!
I was on a media ticket. Here is the review: http://www.brainwavez.org/culture/reviews/2018/20180531001-01.html I don't know how often this kind of physical comedy/mime/clowning is performed but I'd like to see more of it (if done well, obviously). There are students at the College Of Magic who would benefit greatly from seeing a production like this but with more warning to give them a chance to organise a field trip, if they have the funds.
such high energy and intensity along with some really whacky humour :)
Absolutely brilliant!
