An accident.
Who was there?
What did they see?
What really happened?

A white carguard
a mother hooked on therapy
an American who came to South Africa and decided to stay
a paramedic bored with life
a struggling drag artist and lover of all things French

Five people’s experiences of a life.

The Things You Left Behind isn’t a love story. It’s the story around a love story.  It’s the story of all the heartbreaks, little and large, that affect others on the periphery of the lovers’ grand narrative. In a series of five hilarious, moving and intensely human monologues shared by two actors, it takes on the unexpected, the unexplored perspectives on the age-old tale of relationship break ups.

From the perspective of Delores, the drag queen from Delft, to Erwin, the only white car guard in the city, the characters are drawn simultaneously  closer to the love story and a car accident that connect them. Also caught up in the unfolding events are a would-be philosopher paramedic, an ex-lover about to get married and a mother hooked on therapy.

The Things You Left Behind  reveals the subtle, profound bonds that life forges between complete strangers, the hundreds of coincidences and connections that happen each day without us realising it.

It was a moving performance, perfectly executed! I'm sure that it will do great at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

acting was brilliant, esp jason potgieter, who really got into each role. the structure and style reminded me a little of a play i saw at the hampstead in london a few years ago called, hmm, i think something like "till then" or "if only", anyway was by tim price and also consisted of a series of monologues telling the story of an accident. what was interesting there was that it ended with a scene of dialogue. i.e. the 3 characters each spoke in monologues, recollecting, and then in the last scene, suddenly they spoke to each other which gave it a nice kick at the end...maybe it could be tried here if the play's developed further? in terms of narrative it felt almost as tho it was missing a last scene, something to round it off or tie things together. i know it's the nature of the thing to be fragmentary and so on and to be more about the characters than the story itself, but still, it might be something to consider, to also bring the narrative to a satisfying conclusion. still, i enjoyed it. well done. anton
