Black Matter
For years, Black and Brown people have been trying to affirm their humanity in the United States. Dance, sing, laugh and cry on this journey with these young men and women as they talk about their experiences with Black prejudice and ways through which they can seek liberation. Through scenes and monologues the performers detail the trials and tribulations of the Black person in the United States – man, woman, and child. Through this experience you will meet characters such as Ty, Angel and Marcel who take us through their very own journeys about their experience with prejudice.
Black Matter is an original one-act play written in accordance with the Kuumba Principles of the Black Arts Movement. It is a piece that takes place in no specific time and place (can be situated anywhere in the time continuum within the millennium), and is a series of monologues and scenes that can be performed in any order. The dialogue takes on a poetic tone and African American ritual practices, like call and response, are embedded in each piece. The characters will often call for audience response or participation during a scene and/or monologue. Audience members will either improvise a line to motivate actors to move on to the next scene or may be asked to dance or sing along with a piece! Come and be a part of the #BlackMatter experience! You don't want to miss out on this phenomenon!
